The next Michigan governor will shape the way the state adapts to new developments in artificial intelligence.

As states across the country consider how to regulate and deploy new AI technologies, each candidate running to be elected governor in 2026 is bracing for its potential impacts.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was the first to talk about Michigan’s need to be prepared for how AI could change the state’s economy. He’s traveled to Silicon Valley three times since October to learn more about what he calls the next generation of business.

“How many of your businesses are already thinking through how AI might impact it?” Duggan asked a room of business and government leaders at a luncheon hosted by the Southeast Michigan Chamber of Commerce last month. “I guarantee you, your high school children know exactly how to use AI, they’ve got ChatGPT, they’re already getting comfortable.”
