Duggan's campaign for governor promotes union endorsements
Detroit public safety unions lined up behind Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Monday to offer early support to his independent bid for Michigan governor in 2026.

Public safety union leaders gave an early vote of confidence to Mayor Mike Duggan’s gubernatorial campaign Monday.
The Detroit Police Officers Association (DPOA), the Detroit Police Lieutenants & Sergeants Association (DPLSA) and the Detroit Fire Fighters Association (DFFA) represent nearly 4,000 people in Detroit. Leaders of the organizations said they plan to support Duggan in 2026 during a press conference Monday morning at the downtown Detroit Fire Fighters Association.
Raising the salaries of Detroit police officers amid calls to defund police made DPD competitive with departments in the suburbs, DPOA president Craig Miller said.
“He knew that us vs. them politics wouldn’t work, that’s why he invested in the men and women of DPD and the community so we could work together to make Detroit safer,” Miller said. “Our hard work is paying off: violent crime is down and people are coming back to Detroit.”
