Detroit elections 2025: Unofficial candidate list

The City Department of Elections has issued its unofficial list of candidates that will appear on the Aug. 5 primary ballot.
Absentee ballots begin being sent out on June 21, which means we’re nearly one month away from the city’s historic election.
The Detroit Election Commission, made up of the City Clerk, City Council president and County Clerk, will meet this Friday to approve the official primary ballot. The commission meeting is also an opportunity for candidates vying to appear on the ballot to pitch their case.
A number of incumbent candidates occupying city council seats are facing challenges. Neither council president pro-tem James Tate of District 1, and District 4 Council member Latisha Johnson, will face a primary challenge.
Nor will Clerk Janice Winfrey. Republican activist Articia Bomer had filed to challenge Winfrey for City Clerk, but her petition signatures weren’t certified.
There were no candidates who successfully filed petitions to appear on the ballot for the city’s Community Advisory Council. According to Detroit’s city charter, the purpose of these Community Advisory Councils is to improve citizen access to city government.
