Detroit City Council District 2 race: State lawmaker, former council member challenge Whitfield Calloway
Sate Rep. Helena Scott and former council member Roy McCalister Jr. are challenging incumbent Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway for the District 2 seat.
City Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway is running to be reelected to Detroit City Council’s newly redrawn District 2 seat.
Also running to represent the district is a state lawmaker and a former city council member who Whitfield Calloway has already defeated.
Candidates include incumbent Whitfield Calloway, former District 2 council member Roy McCalister Jr. and State Rep. Helena Scott, D-Detroit.
Levan Adams is also a candidate. Adams’ LinkedIn account shows he’s a police detective at the Detroit Police Department. I was not able to reach him prior to publication.
District 2 is full of engaged residents — in year’s past it’s been the city’s highest taxpaying district and one of the highest voting districts. The District 2 boundary stretches from part of the city’s northwest side to the Highland Park city limit.
The district includes Gateway Marketplace, the 350,000-square-foot shopping center home to the Meijer on 8 Mile, the new transit center at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds at Woodward and 8 Mile, the Avenue of Fashion on Livernois and 7 Mile, Palmer Park, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest and University District.
