Carter to challenge Santiago-Romero for Detroit City Council seat

A longtime state lawmaker is planning to run for a Detroit City Council seat currently held by council member Gabriela Santiago-Romero to represent Southwest Detroit.
State Rep. Tyrone Carter, D-Detroit, tells me over the phone Saturday with the changes coming to city council and a new mayor, he’s best served representing Detroit’s District 6 on the nine member body.
Carter, whose state House District covers a portion of Detroit, Ecorse and River Rouge, says he’s gotten calls asking if he’s going to run for mayor.
“I’ve had people recruiting me to run now that we’re not in the majority saying, ‘Why don't you come down to the city and do what you've been doing in Lansing?’ From people who I didn’t even know knew who I was.”
